‘You should have taken a thicker jacket,’ Clara’s father said and resumed eating. He slowly cut the turkey on his plate into bite-sized pieces and gobbled them up to the last one.

‘We would have called you but then your father saw the cab coming so there was no point,’ Mrs. Wilder clarified and pushed Clara to sit down next to her brother. ‘Now eat, you’re hungry.’

‘Did Dad see that, too?’ Clara sighed and accepted the plateful of turkey, gravy, peas, sweet potatoes and cranberry preserve.

Her mother laughed. ‘Well, unless you were clutching your stomach for another reason…’
